Singapore is a small island and total land area is only about 721.5 km². Singapore is one of the smallest island nation but we have a growing population. In 2019, Singapore population is about 580 million. However, Singapore is not food producing nation. Our economy model do not depend on food production. We do not have the luxury of land space for food production.
It is challenging to manage both economic development and provide food for the growing population. Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) is the government body that is set up to tackle the issue. AVA innovates and come up with several strategies to meet the rising challenges. In order to reduce over-reliance on foreign food import, Singapore support locals farmers to innovate and invest in technology to improve food production. The support comes in the form of policy, funding and research.
Singapore farms only produce close to one third of the local food consumption demand, in terms of fish, eggs and vegetable. The rest of the demand are all sourced from all over the world. Famous local food producers include Seng Choon Egg farm. Our supermarket retail chains, such as NTUC Fairprice, Sheng Shiong, import food from Taiwan, S.E Asia and the rest of the world.
