Photographs illustrate aspects of people-environment relationships ranging from situations and locations where physical processes are significant to those in which human activities and influence dominate. In classroom or as part of examinations, students are frequently asked to demonstrate their geographical understanding and interpretation by responding to questions based on photographs.

Photographs provides opportunities to appreciate and empathise with people in different locations and situations. It enables you to analyse situations through alternative viewpoints and develop skills in hypothesising and speculating in geography.

Photographs allow people to think critically, creatively and geographically. Devise your own questions to look into the possible causes of situations, effects and future actions. For examples,

  1. In which part of world do you think the photograph is taken? What is your evidence?
  2. What do you think is happening in the photograph?
  3. What caused the situations?
  4. What might the people/government do next?
